There are so many wonderful culinary herbs that it’s difficult to choose only five for our list, but here goes:

1. Basil. The scent of basil when gently rubbed between your fingers is strong and heavenly. For pasta lovers this herb has to be your top choice. It reminds us of long, relaxing summer days and it is especially good with fresh garlic, black pepper, large cuts of mozzarella, generous slices of juicy beef tomatoes all drizzled with an oil and vinegar dressing. Basil is also the main ingredient in pesto. Basil not only works well in Italian food but also American and Thai cuisines.

2. Lavender. Our favorite herb blend is Herbes De Provence and lavender helps make up this delicious mix, along with savory, thyme, basil and others. It’s perfect on grilled food, especially fish, and in vegetable soups and hearty stews too. Not only is lavender for eating, it helps us de-stress. Lavender helps relax the body, so a lavender bouquet by your pillow will help you have a restful night’s sleep!

3. Dill. Do I hear you say pickles? And it’s perfect with salmon. It’s fine ‘branches’ dress up salmon wonderfully.

4. Rosemary. Think big when you think of Rosemary – it can really grow! This shrub that can be grown into mini culinary Christmas trees – a great gift for a budding chef. It smells heavenly too and it’s a perfect accompaniment for tomatoes and grilled vegetables, soup and meat.

5. Cilantro finishes out our list. It has a very different aroma and definitely livens up a dish. It makes pico de gallo pop, and anything else Mexican!

With the great varieties of herbs available today it’s hard to pick just five top herbs. Growing herbs can be a fun pastime, so if you’ve ever fancied the idea of a herb garden then why not pick up these five herbs in the spring and get planting! You will then have a choice of herbs that will delight your palate that are at hand, for whatever type of dish you are making.

Brian Farrell with helper plants at Our Commun...

It’s mid February  and I am getting my vegetable gardening seed starting station ready in the basement. I want to make sure I am a bit more prepared than last year. I kind of let things get a head of me and before I realized it I was about a month behind and ended up buying all my vegetable plants already started.

I don’t mind spending money, when I have to, but just getting too busy on other things isn’t a good excuse. I would rather spend my money on the gardening tools that will help us work smarter not harder.

We still produced a lot of great produce and tried so many new recipes. Man they were tasty using fresh vegetables. This year we plan to increase our vegetable garden to double, maybe even triple, the size.

We have already started a herb garden indoors so we have fresh herbs year round but we plan to grow enough herbs to dry our own for the winter months.

Right now we tend to use our indoor herbs faster than we can grow them, so I am starting twice as much as we did on this first time around. The aroma from the fresh herb and the taste they offer makes us want fresh over dried.
